Autocratic style of Management- is it linear with success
Two powerful leaders that demonstrated direct, high energy and decisive leadership which many can claim to be autocratic style of Management. Does Autocracy and one individual lead organizations lead to higher performance
Bill Gates and Jobs are both geniuses, they possess super high levels of creative and intellectual ability, from which arrogance would stem and thus the autocratic style. They have a lot to offer to the world through their super genius minds, so they’d obviously feel superior to the rest of the world and feel that they make the best decisions. I really don’t think this style of management can be pulled off by anyone and everyone. One needs solidness and huge depth to be able to adopt this style. Many talented employees need freedom and empowerment to excel and make an impact in the organization. It will be extremely difficult for this style to work in an environment where one needs the employees to make equal and strategic contributions and one needs to work with employees to derive solutions to complex problems. So the leader who adopts such a style, has to be highly confident that he or she will be able to manage the show all by themselves. It’s not every day that a genius is born.
My thoughts are very much in lines with Sonia, "Autocracy" can either make or break an organization. In today's era when we talk about "empowerment",we cannot look at autocracy holistically.
I also feel that these leaders might not end up having good successors!
The point coming from both these articles is unity of command and one individual in the system that needs to be decisive. There are numerous cases when things are left to a democratic set up, things don't happen. Look at the internal progress countries like Gulf, Singapore have made compared to India.
As a case in point, the Anna Hazare case has been botched beyond comprehension all because of a democratic system where Manmohan is being advised by many so called educated leaders like Chidambaram and Kapil
The same applies within organizations. It's not about being accomplished and solidness to pull this style. It's a DNA issue which if you exhibit carry higher chances of success.
The word autocracy may not be the best word to be used in this context. I mean the personification of a autocrat implying, abusive, tyrant, merciless-Hari Sadu type is not what we are referring. Its the type that will give directions and ensure that he/she makes things happen and accountable for results.
